Take any webpage and go to ‘View’ at the top of the screen and then ‘Page Source’ and you will find the title tag at the top of the page. In here, you will find keywords which relate to that website. Below the title, you will find a longer description which is known as the description tag. This is hidden in the header area of the website and is also known as the meta description. This also contains keywords and phrases appertaining to that site.

The best way to approach writing the title and description tags for your own website is to use a combination of advertising copy and SEO. It needs to be appealing to the reader but also needs to appeal to search engines by having plenty of keywords that are: 

1. related to a topic; and
2. are good search terms.

Another place you should list keywords in your site is in the keywords listing area when you set it up. Again, this is in the page’s header area. You should cram the list full of words that you think people will search on if they’re looking for what you offer. 

You can, of course, use the same principle of keywords and tagging when writing ‘behind-the-scenes’ articles which aren’t on your website but are posted to blogs and so on, which then drive traffic to your site. This is where you are more likely to be writing for search engine spiders, so that when they crawl over the sites, you are giving them spider food. Isn’t the terminology great! 

You can also add tags to images, called ALT tags. Again, give it a description which is keyword-rich and optimised for SEO. 

So, when thinking about designing your website, you should not just be thinking about how it will look and how it will feel, but how you will draw people to it. A fantastic website is of no use to you if it isn’t being visited and the only way to make sure you get visitors is to make use of SEO techniques such as meta tags.
