The first question that most people usually ask themselves is what a directory is and what its purpose is. To simply put it; a web directory is a listing of websites which are broken down by categories and once more, by subcategories. Every listing usually also includes a description of a website, in addition to a link which leads people towards the site. This may sound very similar to a search engine; however, it is quite different. The directories are managed by human editors, who go over and review each submission, to determine whether it is appropriate or not, for that directory page. All directories have their own set of directory submission guidelines and those interested, should definitely be familiar with it.
