Chasing The Google Page One Dream

Posted on January 31, 2010 by admin

Are you a company / web owner chasing the Google page one dream?

Does your web designer/developer tell you that’s what they can do for you – that is put you on page one of Google?
Do you think that your internet marketing strategy rests on being on Google page one?
Are you thinking of spending money to be on page one of Google?
Do you visit web sites that state “we can get you onto page one of Google” read their information and think WOW?
Or are you one of those people who proudly declares “I’m on page one of Google” just to make a statement to others?

If you are we have come across 1000’s of people like you and I am sure that there are millions more.

Let me tell you now in 2 words – forget it.

One simple phrase – forget it.

In case you don’t get it I’ll repeat it again – forget it.

The Google page one dream is just that, its hype, its great PR from Google and the search engine optimisation companies that reply on “the dream chasers” for their living and an awful lot of people have fallen for it.

Realistically why is being on page one of Google that important?

Do you think it will “magically” create an instant internet success for your business?
Do you need to justify the costs of your web site by being on page one of Google?

No, the dream of being on Google page one is a crutch, if you manage it, brilliant, fantastic, but too many people seem to think it will suddenly create mass traffic to their web site and therefore “instant success”.  How wrong they/you are.

I would argue that Google page one can have a detrimental effect on your business because it might give your web site mass traffic. It can give you a totally false feeling of security. It can make you forget why you have a web site and importantly what that web site was designed to do.

As a business you decided to have a web site because it would help give you additional business – not because you wanted to be page one Google.  Remember, you decided to have a web site because it would help give you additional business.

Whether you record or calculate statistics in your business you know what works for you. You know that every “x” people who visit you purchase, every “x” people who e-mail you end up as customers, every “x” people …. You may, or may not record it but you know. It’s built on your experience, your knowledge.

So why suddenly will Google page one change all that? It won’t, in fact it could be worse. Yes Google page one can give you lots of hits but unless those people actually do something – i.e. purchase or make an enquiry – is it worth it?

Can you cope with another 10, 20, 100, 200 or more enquires a day, can you meet that demand and supply the goods or services?

My point is that most small businesses can’t. They are very good at what you do, that’s why they are still in business. Their business has been built up on doing what they are good at and supplying the demand from their customers.

Why should the business model suddenly change just because they have a web site? It shouldn’t unless there is extensive planning and the investment available to ensure the demand is met.

The internet is a fickle business, “one day your in, the next your out”. One day you are Google page one, the next your not, so when you are not what happens to your website?

Forget the Google page one dream and concentrate on building a website that works for you and your business. There are far more ways to build your business on the internet than relying on high search engine visability.
