The Meta description and keyword tags are found in the head section of your website. Most people agree that the Meta description and keyword tags will not help your rankings in the search engines but that doesn’t mean that they are not an important part of an optimization campaign. Because the Meta tags don’t weigh heavily in search engine ranking some people don’t bother messing with them at all – this is a mistake. While they may not be key factors in your ranking, they do impact your visibility within the search engines. Any opportunities for including Meta information should be utilized following only White Hat techniques.

Meta Description

The Meta description is a short description, or summary, of the webpage. The description might not impact your search engine ranking but it can significantly increase the click through rate to your website. The Meta description serves as an ad for your webpage and should entice people to want to click through to your site. It shows up in the search results and should give the user a clear description of what they will find when visiting your website. The Meta description needs to be well written.

Keywords should be included in the description but it should not be stuffed with keywords. The description needs to be written well for easy reading and understanding. When a web user searches for specific keywords, the search engine will bold the terms searched for in each of the descriptions in the search results. When you include your keywords in your description the bold words will show that you are relevant to the search performed.

Each webpage on the website should have its own unique Meta description. If you already have a website and the Meta descriptions are the same on all of the pages you will need to create new descriptions for each page. Focus on the most relevant information on each page when writing your descriptions.

The Meta description should be 160 characters or less. Anything over 160 characters is cut off in the search results. To help cut down on the number of characters used, do not repeat the title in the description. Things covered in the title tag do not need to be repeated in the description tag.

Meta Keywords

Meta keywords give you the opportunity to tell the search engines which keywords are significant to your webpage. Only the most important keywords for each individual page should be included in the keyword tags for that page. The keywords used should be words that are relevant to the page content. Do not exceed 8 keywords per page.

The Meta keyword tags for each page should be used in the content of the page. However, don’t spam your site by including too many keywords. The content of the page should still make sense to any site visitors reading the content.

The Meta keywords can also contain common misspellings of the most popular keywords, synonyms and alternate words. Remember to do thorough keyword research when selecting the keywords for each webpage. Just because you think a specific keyword makes sense doesn’t mean that’s actually how other people find your webpage.

1. Guest post on relevant blogs in your niche. This is a highly-effective way of promoting your site and getting noticed not only by the search engines but by your target audience. The best way to start is to compile a list of the most popular and well-read blogs in your niche. Find the contact information of the blog owner. Then, write the best blog post you can, and send it along in an email to each blog owner to see if they’ll post your content. Not all will say yes, but even if just one actually does post your content, it will go a long way in improving your rankings and your site’s visibility.
